Rampant graft and corruption may have characterized the implementation of infrastructure projects in Lanao del Sur.

A source in the Regional Development Planning Board, who requested anonymity for obvious reasons, revealed that the Regional Project Monitoring Committee found that some projects in Lanao del Sur that have exhausted their budgets were physically incomplete while some do not actually exist.

It was disclosed that findings were supported by satellite data.

It was also gathered that two road concreting projects along the national highway, one near the border of Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur and another within the municipality of Calanugas, Lanao del Sur was fully paid although these were abandoned by the Contractors.

Rumors about incomplete or ghost projects in Lanao del Sur had been normally spreading in previous years but were never confirmed.

It used to be said that COA Representatives from Manila on a mission to attest status or completion of projects in the province were just met in some restaurants in Cagayan de Oro City and “settled” by disbursing officers.

Through the use of state-of-the art information and communication technology, real time data can be obtained by project monitors.

As of press time, concerned officials in Lanao del Sur were not available for comments.
