Solons express optimism on BBL passage

April 16, 2015

Representative Jesus Sacdalan of the 1st District of North Cotabato recently expressed optimism that congress will be able to pass the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) by June of this year.

In an interview with the media in Cotabato City, Sacdalan said that congress will again meet on April 20 to 23 to deliberate on the remaining provisions that were not tackled before the Ad Hoc committee decided to discontinue its hearings on the BBL after the January 25 Mamasapano incident.

Sacdalan who also serves as the chairperson of the House Committee on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity added that despite the effects of the Mamasapano incident to the peace process some members of the House, especially those from Luzon and Visayas had slowly been enlightened on the importance of the BBL especially in bringing peace and development to Mindanao.

Another congressman, Jorge “Bolet” Banal of the 3rd District of Quezon City also conveyed his support to the BBL by saying that now is the right time for congress to enact the proposed law.

“What remains to the floor now is for the Senators and Congressmen to act on the proposed law in order for the peace talks to move forward,” Banal pointed out.

Banal was among the 35 House members who issued a statement last month expressing their full support to the passage of the BBL.

He said that questions on the sincerity of both parties to the peace process were already answered through the series of investigations and hearing conducted by both houses in congress.

“The MILF leadership constantly conveyed their assurance to follow the agreement. Processes such as the normalization, decommissioning and the implementation of socio-economic projects that were stipulated in the CAB are being worked out for implementation,” Banal stressed.
