DATELINE ILIGAN. Nobody dies after deworming – GTLMH

Nobody died after the deworming conducted in the City Public Schools last July 29.

Liberty Pabillaran, a Nurse of the Outpatient Department of Gregorio T. Lluch Memorial Hospital told newsmen that all of the children admitted for abdominal pains and vomiting after the deworming were outpatients.

She said that the pain suffered by some children soon subsided after antacid were given while those who felt severe pain were injected with pain relievers.

Pabillaran said, however, pain relievers were prescribed when the children went home in case pain will recur.

She also said that some children complained of headaches, nausea and vomiting but most of the children suffered abdominal pains.

On the other hand, Dr. Agripina Gaite of the City Health Office reportedly said that the abdominal pains, headaches, nausea and vomiting were normal effects of the deworming drug.

She said that this was the reason why there was a monitoring team and vehicles ready in case a need arises to transport to the nearest hospital.

She also said that the parents had been informed earlier of the possible side effects of the medicines and what the monitoring team will do in case these would happen.

She added that the teachers had instructed the parents beforehand to feed their children so that their stomachs are full before they are made to take Albendazole, the deworming medicine administered.

It was gathered that the deworming activity was a joint simultaneous program of the Department of Health and the Department of Education for Kindergarten to Grade 6 public schools pupils nationwide.

The activity was reportedly covered by Department of Health Memorandum No. 80, series of 2015 or the guidelines in the implementation of deworming and that the purpose of this activity is to avoid the trouble of Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis (STH) infections that have adverse effects on the health of children.

In Iligan it was reported that around 42 thousand elementary school pupils were dewormed.

DOH and DepEd reportedly targeted around 16 million pupils nationwide for deworming. – The New Ranao Star –
