Five faculty members from the College of Agriculture Mindanao State University main campus will attend the "Hands-on Training on Cacao Production and Technology" on February 21,2016 to be held at Rosit Farm located at Baguio Proper Calinan, Davao City.

Among those faculty members recommended by Dean Dr. Pangandag Magolama to attend said training seminar are Dr. Celeste Querijero, Mr. Mobarak Hadji Amin, Mr. Vicente Literal and Mr. Acmad Magolama.

The Manager of Rosit farm said the following topics will be discussed during the training seminar such as: 1) nursery establishment and maintenance; 2) seeds preparation and seeds growing; 3) field planting and maintenance; 4) land preparation, lay out and staking, holing, and basal fertilization; 5) grafting, cleft grafting, side grafting and building; 6) formative pruning and maintenance; 7) fertilization (nursery, newly field planted and fruit bearing; 8) spraying (nursery, newly planted and fruit bearing; 8) formative pruning and maintenance pruning; 9) financial analysis for 1 hectare; 10) budget for 1 hectare; 11) other opportunities in cacao farming, and 12) practical farming methods and techniques.

Magolama said planting cacao among other trees, such as fruit trees, provides many benefits: shade for the cacao trees, increased biodiversity on the farm, inhibited growth of weeds (reducing the need for chemical herbicides), and additional food and income for the farmer's family.

Aside from that managing the inputs and outputs of the land plays an important role in preserving the environment, Magolama added.

Our soil in MSU farm particularly, in nearby municipalities are good growers for cacao plantation.
