Comelec: registration for barangay, SK polls may start in July

The registration of voters for the October 2016 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections may start next month, a media report quoted the Commission on Elections (Comelec) as saying June 11.

“We are trying to have the registration of voters as early as July. The registration may take two months because of SK,” Comelec Iloilo provincial supervisor Wil Arceńo was quoted a saying.

The Barangay and SK elections will be conducted on the last Monday of October.

With the enactment of the SK Reform Act, the age limit for SK has been changed to 18 up to 24 years old from the previous 15 to 17 years old.

Those who are interested to run for an SK post must be a registered SK voter and a resident of the barangay where he/she intends to run for at least one year, a Filipino citizen and able to read and write.

Further, Arceńo said that special ballots and list for voters for SK may be separated from those of regular voters who are 18 years old and above. (PNA)

To be elected during the barangay and SK elections are the Punong Barangay, more commonly known as barangay captains, and members of the Sangguniang Barangay, or barangay council,.

Also to be elected are the Sangguniang Kabataan chairs and SK officials in 42,028 barangays throughout the Philippines whose terms start in November 2016.

Barangays are the smallest local government unit in the Philippines.

These elections will conclude the 2016 election cycle that start in May with the election of the Philippine president, the members of the Philippine Congress and provincial, city and municipal officials.

Upon their election, barangay captains shall elect their cities' or municipalities' League of Barangays of the Philippines chairman, also known as the Association of Barangay Captains or ABC Chairman, who will also sit on their respective local municipal or city council.

The provincial ABC chairman will also sit on the provincial board.
