A former executive assistant of then Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz was shot to death at around 6:00 Monday evening inside his residence at Purok Ilang-Ilang, Barangay Villaverde, here.

A lone gunshot wound on his forehead caused the death of Noel Tabuco Magaro, 52. He was brought to a nearby hospital but was declared 'dead on arrival'.

"Diha mi sa sala naglingkod, tingala ko nga mi-piti man ang bintana, paglingi nako kay subhanan man sa pistola. Paglingi sa akong bana kay mibuto dayun, gipusil dayun siya," said Adela, the victim's wife in an interview.

Initial investigation revealed the suspect immediately fled to unknown direction on board a black XRM motorcycle with waiting driver.

"On-going ang atong investigation and we are looking all possible angles sa pagpamusil including personal nga conflict sa pamilya o kaha sa pulitika," said Chief Inspector Jasper Ian E. Pasco, chief of Iligan City Police Station 5.

The driver was reportedly wearing helmet and jacket while the gunman was wearing a hooded jacket.

Magaro was executive assistant of the Cruz' administration for nine years or three terms. "Nahimo usab siya nga Special Operations Officer of the City Mayor's Office who is in-charge of identifying issues and concerns, including peace and order problem, sa hinterland areas. Siya pud ang gisaligan nga mo-settle og mga rido or conflict between Muslim and Christian groups," according to Melvin T. Anggot, former Information Officer of the local government of Iligan.

Magaro ran as city councilor in the 2013 elections but lost. His wife and his brother, who is a former Barangay Chairman on Digkilaan, confirmed that he already announced his intention to run as chairman of the same barangay in the next barangay elections.*
