Ecological Governance Forum: Lumbatan in Perspective

On July 18, 2016, representatives from five municipalities in Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao met in Parang, Maguindanao, to discuss the environmental issues they are facing and together find ways to address them.

There and then, they organized the Bangsamoro Alliance for Ecological Governance
(BAEG).

The state of the environment has become among the top governance agenda for many countries around the world.

With the effects of climate change and natural and man-made risks to biodiversity and humanity worsening every day, it has become imperative for political leaders to protect and preserve the environment.

In the Philippines, questions about the capacity of our local government units to act on climate change, and take ecological governance seriously, only came into the forefront after Filipinos have come face-to-face with the effects of global warming, including super typhoons, El Nino, storm surges, rise of sea level, and flooding.

On July 18, 2016, representatives from five municipalities in Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao met to discuss the environmental issues they are facing and together find ways to address them.

In this meeting, the local leaders agreed that there needs to be a single, cohesive effort to address climate change and its effects in the Bangsamoro areas. Thus, the Bangsamoro Alliance for Ecological Governance was formed.
