Nine suspected members of the Maute Group were arrested in a predawn raid at their alleged hideout in Mindanao State University (MSU) main campus in Marawi City Monday, January 30.

Initial media report quoting authorities said the raid was conducted at an apartment building inside the University by joint members of the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

It said they seized two pieces of improvised explosive device from two rooms.

But residents who refused to be identified, believed said explosive devices were planted.
The arrested suspects denied their alleged link with the local armed group, which is reportedly allied with the Islamic State.

Authorities said the nine personalities will be crossed checked with a list of known members of the Maute Group.

The raid was conducted as troops continue the offensive against the Maute Group at their bailiwick in nearby Butig town.

Media reported the AFP had said that during an operation last week, Abu Sayyaf Group leader Isnilon Hapilon was seriously wounded.

It also said that 15 militants were killed in the operations that started Wednesday last week. (Agency)
