The Davao-GenSan-Bitung route will help decongest other busy ports in the country because more traders and shipping companies are expected to use the new sea link to trade with ASEAN member countries due to lower cost and shorter travel time, an official said Monday.

Earmarie Gilayo, Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) International Relations Division chief, said the opening of the new route is also geared towards supporting the business sector on the ease of doing business.

Gilayo said traders around the country are looking at the new route, including those calling at the Port of Manila, because of the lower cost.

The sea connectivity is in line with the Philippine government's advocacy of promoting unity among ASEAN member-countries.

On Sunday, President Rodrigo Duterte and Indonesian President Joko Widodo jointly launched the new Davao-GenSan-Bitung route in Davao City.

Gilayo said this serves as a bridge to link Mindanao to other key cities in the ASEAN.

This is also a major breakthrough for BIMP-EAGA, which stands for Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines - East ASEAN Growth Area.

Gilayo said Davao and General Santos have put in place their customs, immigration, quarantine and security (CIQS) mechanisms as well as those in Indonesia.

The harmonization of the CIQS will make the movement of goods and people easier within the BIMP-EAGA sub-region.
